MLB: Indians Mr. Versatile Casey Blake Wins AL Player of the Week

Blake edged out 2006 A.L. MVP Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins and Magglio Ordoñez of the Detroit Tigers.

CLEVELAND - Versatile infielder/outfielder Casey Blake of the Cleveland Indians has been named winner of the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 27th.

Blake, who collected eight extra-base hits last week, faced some of the season's toughest competition en route to winning the weekly honors.

In six games, he posted a .348 batting average (8-for-23) with a 1.087 slugging percentage and a .483 on-base percentage.

Overall, he put up eight runs scored, three doubles, a triple, four home runs, eight RBI, six walks and 25 total bases to edge 2006 A.L. MVP Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins and Magglio Ordoñez of the Detroit Tigers.

Morneau hit .400, slugged .920, had four homers and topped the nominees with 13 RBI.

Ordoñez - who currently leads the A.L. with 48 RBI, ranks second with a .357 batting average and places third with 12 home runs - hit .435 and slugged .957 with six extra-base hits and nine RBI.

Oakland's Nick Swisher (.435, 3 HR, 11 RBI) also received consideration.

Angels righthander John Lackey (2-0, 2.08 ERA), Mariners lefthander Jarrod Washburn (2-0, 2.70) and Indians closer Joe Borowski (4.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 4 SV) were among the pitchers nominated.
