May-06-2006 19:01Women's Softball: Top-Ranked UCLA Garners 1-0 Softball Victory Over No. 5 Oregon StateSalem-News.com Sports
CORVALLIS - Caitlin Benyi`s two-out fifth inning RBI single to left field provided all of the scoring as top-ranked UCLA gave No. 5 ranked Oregon State a heart-breaking 1-0 loss in front of 864 fans at the OSU Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon. Oregon State (37-10; 9-7 Pac-10) junior pitcher Ta`Tyana McElroy allowed just five Bruin hits in the complete game performance, but UCLA (42-5; 14-3 Pac-10) used Andrea Duran`s double and Benyi`s two-out RBI to squeak-out the game`s lone run in the fifth. “It was a hard-fought game,“ said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. “Sometimes you can play a great game and not win – that`s the Pac-10.“ Brianne McGowan and Stefanie Ewing posted back-to-back singles in the second inning against UCLA starter Lisa Dodd to give the Beavers an opportunity to get an early advantage, but OSU couldn`t capitalize. Bruin ace Anjelica Selden entered the game in the third inning and didn`t allow an Oregon State hit, while recording seven strikeouts en route to her 27th victory. Oregon State sophomore Cambria Miranda went 2-for-3 from the plate. OSU closes out the regular season in Corvallis against UCLA on Sunday. Game-time is scheduled for 12 p.m. Beaver seniors Lisa Allen, Adrienne Alo, Maggie DeWall, Vanessa Iapala, Amy Klever and Ingrid Lochelt will be honored prior to the game`s first pitch.
