Women's Basketball: Oregon Gets Past Long Beach State, 44-33

Oregon doubled its nine-point halftime lead early in the second period, holding LBSU scoreless for the first five minutes en route to a 33-15 advantage.

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Jessie Shetters recorded the first double-double of her career, leading the University of Oregon women’s basketball team past Long Beach State, 44-33, Sunday afternoon at The Pyramid.

The Ducks (2-0) used a strong defense and productive bench for the second straight game, limiting the 49ers (0-4) to 25 percent shooting.

Shetters, a 6-6 senior post from Portland, Ore., had career highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds, while adding three blocked shots in the defensive affair.

Freshman Taylor Lilley continued her hot start, pouring in a game-high 14 points off the bench. The 5-6 guard, from nearby Newhall, Calif., also grabbed six rebounds.

LBSU was paced by sophomore guard Karina Figueroa, who scored 13 points on 5-of-21 shooting.

Bench scoring favored the Ducks, 21-7, and Oregon also held the advantage in points off turnovers, 24-9.

Defense was the story in this one for both sides as UO managed only 29 percent shooting and was 1-for-13 from three-point range.

The Beach used an 8-1 spurt to climb back within 11 at 34-23 with 8:17 to play, but Lilley drained a pair of free throws which appeared to stem the tide.

But the hosts didn’t go quietly, carving into UO’s lead and getting it back down to single digits at 38-29 with over four minutes to play.

Thanks to a 15-2 run to end the half, Oregon led 24-13 at the break. The Ducks held Long Beach without a field goal for a stretch of 9:10 in turning a two-point deficit into a nine-point lead.

Shetters led all players in the opening stanza with eight points.

The 49ers jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held Oregon without a point for the first 2:49 of the game before Haring hit a jumper in the lane.

The Ducks were their own worst enemies early, turning the ball over five times in the games first six minutes.

Oregon fought back, taking its first lead at 9-8 on a Jamie Hawkins lay-up at the 11:42 mark.

Next up for the Ducks is the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday and Saturday at McArthur Court. Utah and Pittsburgh open the tourney with a 5:00 PM game, followed by Boise State and UO at 7:00 PM.
