Women’s Basketball: Beavers Come Up Short In Exhibition Opener, 71-68

Oregon State returns to the court at 7:00 PM on Sunday for an exhibition game against Western Oregon University.

Freshman Judie Lomax had 22 rebounds and 15 points against Team Concept on Wednesday.

CORVALLIS - Freshman Judie Lomax had 22 rebounds and 15 points, but the Oregon State women’s basketball team saw its last minute rally fall short, as the Beavers dropped their exhibition opener to Team Concept by a 71-68 margin on Wednesday night in Gill Coliseum.

OSU trailed by 10 points (62-52) with just under 10 minutes left in the contest, but used a 14-6 run to pull within two (68-66) when freshman Jasmine Smith buried a 3-pointer with 3:33 on the clock.

Team Concept failed to connect on three consecutive one-and-one opportunities from the foul line in the game’s final minute, but Oregon State missed a lay-up and turned the ball over three times, making it impossible to recover.

“We’re young, we’re learning, and we’ve got to stick with it,” said OSU head coach LaVonda Wagner. “If we make our free throws and lay-ups, we would have won.”

The Beavers knocked down 19-of-27 shots from the free throw line while Team Concept hit 9-of-13 freebies.

OSU held nearly a 2 to 1 rebounding advantage – pulling down 51 boards compared to Team Concept’s 26. Lomax’s 22 rebounds in her Beaver debut would have broken the school record if the game was a regular season outing.

Junior transfer Ashley Allen led Oregon State with 18 points and hit 7-of-14 field goal attempts, while senior Casey Nash chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds.

Team Concept’s Sheila Lambert led all players with 24 points and five assists.

All five Oregon State starters – Lomax, Nash, Allen, Mercedes Fox-Griffin, and Stacey Nichols – scored in the first six minutes of the game as the Beavers took a 10-2 lead out of the gates.

The score was tied 34-34 at the half.
