Nov-24-2006 22:16Women's Basketball: Boise State Tops Oregon, 56-47Salem-News.com SPORTSOregon senior transfer Jamie Hawkins, facing her former team, had eight points and seven rebounds.
EUGENE - Sophomore Jessica Thompson had 25 points to lead the Boise State Broncos over the Oregon Ducks, 56-47, in the second game of the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament, held Friday night at McArthur Court. Eleanor Haring was the only Duck to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points, as the Broncos rode Thompson's hot hand over the Ducks' more balanced attack. "Boise State really stepped up tonight," head coach Bev Smith said. "When we were making stops late in the game, we found some momentum, but they were able to weather our storm." Freshman guard Taylor Lilley was the focus of the Bronco defense, coming off of her stellar performance last weekend, and Boise State was able to limit her to six points on two-of-six shooting. The Ducks were again tough on defense, but despite holding the Broncos to 27.7 percent from the field, the Ducks could not quite find an offensive tempo of their own. Bronco guard Tasha Harris was the second-leading scorer for the Broncos, scoring ten points depite only shooting 1-of-12 from the field. The Ducks will next take on the Utah Utes tomorrow night in the consolation game of the tournament, while the Broncos will take on Pittsburgh, who defeated Utah, 59-51 in the opening game of the tournament. The Ducks will follow the championship game, which will begin at 5:00 PM. GAME 1 RECAP: Shavonte Zellous scored a game-high 28 points as the University of Pittsburgh knocked off Utah, 59-51, in the opener of the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament Friday at McArthur Court. Pitt (5-0) secured a spot in Saturday’s championship match-up, while Utah (1-3) will play in the consolation game against the Ducks at 7:00 PM. Morgan Warburton was the only Ute in double figures, scoring 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting.
