Oregon, BYU to Meet in Las Vegas Bowl

Oregon closed it’s regular season with a 7-5 record and could finish in a multiple-team tie for fourth place in the Pacific-10 Conference.

EUGENE - The University of Oregon has accepted an invitation to meet BYU in the 15th annual Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 21st in Sam Boyd Stadium.

The game is scheduled to kickoff at 5:00 PM (PST) and will be televised nationally by ESPN.

This will mark Oregon’s 10th bowl game in 12 seasons under head coach Mike Bellotti as well as the program’s second Las Vegas Bowl appearance.

The Ducks last played in the game in 1997, defeating Air Force, 41-13.

“My entire coaching staff and players are extremely excited to be invited to play in the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl,” Bellotti said. “The coaches remember and the players have heard stories about how much fun it was last time and the great experience the people of Las Vegas provided for all of us.

“Certainly that game helped to springboard a lot of the things we’ve accomplished at Oregon since the 1997 season. Also the fact we play a tremendous opponent in BYU that is certainly capable of scoring a lot of points and is having their best season in a long time adds to our anticipation.

“BYU is a program that brings with them great tradition and we will certainly have our hands full.”

The Cougars finished the regular season capturing the Mountain West Conference championship with a 10-2 record and ranked 20th in the country (AP).

It will mark the sixth meeting between the two schools, with Oregon holding a 3-2 series advantage after downing BYU in 1990 in Eugene, 32-16.

The Cougars rank fourth in the country in passing offense (319.3 avg.), fifth in total offense (458.6) and sixth in scoring offense (36.7).

Ticket information has been distributed to Oregon season-ticket holders and donors, who have until Friday to maintain their priority status for advance ticket purchases.

Ticket sales to the general public will begin at 9 a.m. Friday online at goducks.com, by calling (541) 346-4461 or in person at the Casanova Center Athletic Ticket Office.

All reserved seats are $50 each.

The bowl already has sold all of its available tickets, with the only seats remaining being the participating schools’ allotment of tickets, with seating capacity of Sam Boyd Stadium approaching 45,000.

The University of Oregon Alumni Association is the host of the university’s 2006 Official Bowl Tour, offering full packages (air, hotel, ground transportation, etc.) and land-only accommodations.
