Nov-06-2006 09:50Women's Basketball: Oregon State Dominates Western Oregon, 96-44Salem-News.com SPORTSOregon State opens the regular season on Saturday against Southern Utah. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM in Gill Coliseum.
CORVALLIS - Freshman guard Jasmine Smith scored 26 points to lead five Oregon State players in double figures as the Beavers stormed past Western Oregon by a 96-44 score in Sunday’s exhibition women’s basketball game. All nine Beaver players scored on the night as the balanced OSU attack led from start to finish. Western Oregon closed within two points (14-12) on just one occasion early in the first half, but Oregon State responded by using a 42-14 run over the final 11-minutes of the frame to take a commanding 56-26 lead into the locker room. OSU’s pressuring defense forced the Wolves to commit 20 turnovers on the night that led to 31 Beaver points. Smith, from Pinole, CA, buried 10-of-16 shots from the floor, including 4-of-7 from beyond the 3-point arc en route to her game-high scoring honors. “We were much more focused tonight,” said OSU head coach LaVonda Wagner. “We did a good job of spreading the wealth – it was exciting to have five people in double figures.” Senior Casey Nash and junior Ashley Allen scored 14 points each, while sophomore guard Mercedes Fox-Griffin had 12 points and six assists. Freshman post Stacey Nichols chipped in 10 points and Judie Lomax added 17 rebounds. Three Western Oregon players reached double figures in scoring, led by Brittany MacGregor’s 14 points. OSU buried 56-percent of it field goals in the game compared to just a 25-percent clip from WOU. The Beavers also held a decisive 49-30 rebounding advantage.
