Ducks Promote Efforts to Support Cancer Research

The hats may be purchased from any American Family Insurance agent, the University Bookstore in Eugene, any of the five Duck Shop locations in Portland, Eugene and Bend, as well as in Autzen Stadium during each of Oregon’s four remaining home games.

EUGENE - Researchers addressing a cure for cancer will receive a boost from University of Oregon football fans this fall as the school will help facilitate the sale of a limited edition Ducks’ LIVESTRONG baseball-style cap, with proceeds aimed at funding research to combat cancer.

The promotion is sponsored by American Family Insurance in partnership with the Lance Armstrong Foundation and will provide fans an opportunity to purchase a yellow cap, designed exclusively for the Ducks by Nike, for $20, with more than $10 from each sale to be donated to researchers in the area of adolescent and young adult cancer.

Proceeds from the cap sales will be distributed to the Oregon Health & Science University’s Cancer Institute, the University of Oregon Institute of Molecular Biology and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Although the baseball caps have been available for several weeks, efforts have focused on Saturday’s Oregon home football game with UCLA as the date to draw attention to the cause.

“Among diseases, cancer is the leading killer of young adults between the ages of 15 and 40,” said Rob Quesnel, American Family’s state sales director of Oregon. “Researchers have not been able to improve survival rates since 1975. It’s time we gained more ground on this terrible disease.

“By purchasing this unique hat, Ducks’ fans have the opportunity to both show their support for the school and also help researchers in their search for a cure,” Quesnel said.
