MONMOUTH - It took 109 minutes and 56 seconds to settle the verdict, before Maggie Kuzmer’s 25-yard free kick ended an afternoon of drama as Western Oregon edged Southern Oregon 2-1 in double overtime in a non-conference women’s soccer.

The Wolves will now return to Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, hosting league-leader Seattle on Friday (3 PM) and Central Washington on Sunday (noon).

Kuzmer’s shot ended a tense match that began without many fireworks but certainly ended with some.

The match was scoreless for 73 minutes before WOU got on the board on a Lisa Munyon shot, that came courtesy of Liorah Riutzel’s corner kick. It appeared that score might stand, giving the hosts a 1-0 victory, but the Raiders answered with just 35 seconds remaining on Nicole Vilarino’s rebound shot. Vilarino gathered a ball that had been saved by WOU goalie Ally Meyer on a free kick, and punched it back in for the score.

In the first overtime, both teams had shots but couldn’t find the net. In the second extra period, the Wolves had four shots that didn’t connect before an SOU foul set up Kuzmer’s game winner. The sophomore calmly set up the ball with about 17 seconds left, and finally kicked it with six tics left on the clock and it found the net with just four seconds on the clock, just past the outstretched arms of Raider goalie Melanie Hopkins.

The Wolves outshot the Raiders on the day 22-14. Meyer finished with six saves for the Wolves, while Hopkins had six for SOU.
