Portland Scores Three Second Half Goals, Beats Oregon, 3-0

Oregon opens up Pac-10 play Friday at No. 24 Arizona.

PORTLAND - After a scoreless first half, No. 7 Portland came alive to score three goals in the second half and defeat Oregon 3-0 Sunday at Merlo Field.

Three different players scored for the defending NCAA champions. Michelle Enyeart’s goal in the 60th minute broke a scoreless tie. Enyeart’s goal came off a perfect cross from Kendra Chandhoke, who threaded the ball through traffic and to Enyeart for a point-blank finish.

Elsa Hume struck for the Pilots (9-2-1) in the 73rd minute and Chandhoke rounded out the scoring in the 79th minute. Angie Woznuk had two assists for Portland.

"I’m proud of the way we played, especially the first 60 minutes," said Oregon coach Tara Erickson, whose team finished non-conference play with a 6-5 mark. "That was the best job we’ve done all season of sticking to our game plan.

"I think the game turned when (Chandhoke) came in," she said. "We had a hard time handling her speed, and our defense already had their hands full. But our backs did a good job today and I thought we played hard all over the field."

Nicole Garbin led Oregon in shots with five and had the Ducks’ best opportunity to score early in the second half. Taking a long pass from sophomore Jen Cameron, Garbin got behind the Pilot defense in the far right corner of the penalty box, but UP goalkeeper Cori Alexander rushed out on Garbin and cut down the sixth-year senior’s hard-angle shot.

Alexander finished with four saves. Oregon’s Jessie Chatfield made seven saves in a losing effort.

The Ducks were whistled for a season-high 20 fouls, which was tied for the third-highest single-game total in school history and just three off the school record.

It was a much different game than last season’s 6-0 dominating win by Portland in Eugene. Not only were the Pilots up 4-0 at halftime a year ago, but for the game, they outshot the Ducks 20-2.

This year’s annual contest between the two state rivals was netted 0-0 at the half and for the game, Portland outshot Oregon by three attempts, 14-11. The Ducks also attempted one more corner kick than the Pilots.

"We’re not going to see a better team or play in a tougher environment than what we experienced today," said Erickson. "Even though we lost, we responded well and it was a good game for us to play heading into the Pac-10 season."

GAME NOTES: Oregon’s streak of consecutive games scoring a goal came to an end at seven, one off the school record.

UP snapped Oregon’s scoreless streak at 262:01, dating back to the Sept. 22nd Nevada loss, the fourth-longest streak in school history.

Chatfield’s individual scoreless streak, which dates to the Sept. 3rd Loyola-Marymount game, ended at 336:30, second only to her own school record of 355:47 set last season.

Portland played without standouts Megan Rapino and Stephanie Lopez, who were with the U.S. National team for its 10-0 win over Chinese Taipei on Sunday

Rapino scored two goals in the second half for the United States. The Ducks finished with a winning non-conference record (6-5) for the second year in a row. Garbin’s 45 shots on the year ranks fifth on the UO single season list.
