WESTWOOD, Calif. - The Oregon State women’s swimming team began the weekend by defeating UC Santa Barbara (0-2) 188-144 and falling to UCLA (1-1, 1-0 Pacific-10 Conference) 117-140.

The Beavers (2-2, 0-2 Pac-10 Conference) split for the second consecutive weekend to begin the season.

“We did a very nice job today,” OSU head coach Larry Liebowitz said. “Out first real team got disqualified and that hurt us a little bit because we had to play catch-up.”

Saori Haruguchi led the way for the Beavers by finishing first overall in the 100 backstroke (56.60), 200 fly (2:01.92), and the 100 fly (55.90). Haruguchi’s career dual wins now total 24, which puts her in a tie for 13th place in school history with Kelly Kaplan.

Sandy Hong, swimming at UCLA for the final time in her career, picked up her 25th career dual meet win in the 200 free (1:53.91). Kayla Rawlings finished behind Haruguchi in the 200 fly (2:03.99) for the Beavers 1-2 attack.

For the second consecutive week, the Beavers received strong contributions from their freshman class. Megan Evans picked up a pair of dual meet wins in the 200 br. (2:19.77) And 200 IM (2:07.15). Brittney Iverson picked up her second dual meet win of the season in the 1,000 free (10:14.09).

Despite having their first relay disqualified, the Beavers bounced back and won the 400 free relay (3:31.60). The team of Anna Crandall, Erika Wirth, Rawlings, and Iverson paced the Beavers to victory.
