PORTLAND - The Portland Winter Hawks came from 3-0 down in the third period and put a scare into the defending US Division Champion Everett Silvertips, but came up just short, dropping a 3-2 decision Saturday at the Everett Events Center.

Colton Sceviour and Viktor Sjodin scored third period goals for Portland and Frazer McLaren got a dangerous shot away in the final seconds.

Kyle Beech, Peter Mueller and Jason Fransoo scored for Everett. Portland goalie Kurtis Mucha was brilliant early as Everett came out flying in the first ten minutes of the game, Mucha holding the fort.

The Hawks skated with Everett the rest of the way and forced goalie David Reekie, just acquired in a trade this week, to make several big saves in the second period, one a huge glove save on Sceviour.

Mucha finished with 27 saves and Reekie stopped 19 shots for Everett.

Everett, (6-1-0-1), which still trails first place Tri-Cities by 1 point in the race for first place in the US Division, suffered its first regulation loss of the season, 5-2, in Spokane Friday.

Portland, (3-5-0-0), is undefeated at home, (3-0), following Friday’s 3-2 overtime win over Chilliwack in Memorial Coliseum, but is now (0-5) on the road.

The Hawks next home game is this Friday, October 20th, against the defending Eastern Conference Champion Medicine Hat Tigers at 7:30 PM in Memorial Coliseum (In Arena audio at 96.5 FM., Comcast CNW-14 TV).

The Hawks play their first home game against a US Division opponent next Saturday, October 21, at 7:30 PM when the Everett Silvertips come to town (In Arena audio at 96.5 FM, Comcast CNW-14 TV).

Portland completes a 3-game in 3-night weekend with a trip to Chilliwack to play the Bruins on Sunday.

Sceviour scored 13 seconds into the third period as Nick Hotson took a hit to get the puck in deep on the first shift in the third period. Sceviour darted out from behind the net and stuffed the puck home. McLaren set up Sjodin with a shot from the left wing that grazed the post, Sjodin at the front of the net to finish the job with 12:36 left.

The Hawks play Everett 10 times this season.

The Hawks scratched Cameron Cepek (shaken up in Spokane Tuesday), Chip Petrino (numbers), Tayler Jordan (numbers), Brayden Nargang (took warm up skate), Devon Marshall (numbers).

Everett is still without premier forward Ondrej Fiala (knee).
