Bearcats Win Title at Willamette University Women's Invitational

Linfield's Wheeler Claims Medalist Honors, Willamette's Ueno Takes Second.

SALEM - The Bearcats won the team title at the Willamette University Women’s Invitational on Monday, recording a score of 373 at the Illahe Hills Country Club to edge Linfield College, which shot 375.

In the medalist race, Linfield’s Leslie Wheeler shot a 79 (39-40) to take first place, while Whitney Ueno of Willamette finished second with an 83 (41-42).

Full teams from Willamette and Linfield, plus two golfers from George Fox University, competed in the Northwest Conference Southern Division event.

The next action for women’s golf teams in the conference is the NWC Fall Classic, set for Oct. 23rd-24th at Tokatee Golf Course in Blue River, Ore.

At Illahe Hills on Monday, Willamette golfers carded two scores in the 80’s and one in the 90’s on its way to the team title. Ueno’s 83 led the way and was followed by Rachel Shahbaz at 85 (42-43) and May Ushikubo at 92 (46-46).

Rounding out the Bearcats’ team score was Ashley Buchheit, who shot 113 (58-55). Also shooting 113 for WU was Andrea Hand. Tanya Schiller completed Willamette’s overall lineup with a 130 (61-69).

Wheeler was the only Linfield golfer to score below 90, but Brittany Johnson added a 93 (47-46) and Shawnie Dakan tacked on a 97 (50-47). The Wildcats completed their score with Rachel Warwick’s 106 (53-53). Also playing the 18-hole course for Linfield was Kelly Chance, who shot 112 (62-50).

The top competitor for George Fox was Whitney Clunes, who shot a 90 (45-45) to establish a school record for the first-year program. The Bruins also received a 105 (52-53) from Christine Collier.

Following Wheeler in first and Ueno in second in the medalist race, were Shahbaz of Willamette in third (85), Clunes of GFU in fourth (90) and Ushikubo of Willamette in fifth (92). Seven of the 13 athletes competing carded scores below 100.
