Oregon Tops Oregon State, 2-1 in OT, to Capture Soccer Civil War Battle

EUGENE - Despite taking a 1-0 lead in the second half, the Oregon State women’s soccer team couldn’t hold on and Oregon rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory in Pacific-10 Conference play on Friday evening at Pape’ Field.

The Beavers looked to be in good shape after junior forward Jodie Taylor scored a goal in the 53rd minute. But the Ducks tied the game in the 67th minute and won it in the 94th.

“We’re disappointed in the manner in which we lost,” OSU Coach Steve Fennah said. “Once we took the lead, we had too many bad clearances and bad giveaways, and that helped Oregon come back. We played pretty well overall. The first half was very even. We scored a very good goal and had some other opportunities.”

Taylor’s goal was her team-high seventh of the season and the 32nd of her career. She took over sole possession of second place on OSU’s all-time list and needs just two more to tie for first.

The Ducks’ Allison Newton scored on a shot from 23 yards away to tie the game in the 67th minute, however. Oregon’s Nicole Garbin won the game in overtime in the 94th minute. OSU failed to clear the ball, and Garbin didn’t miss on her opportunity to score her ninth goal of the season.

OSU senior goalkeeper Melissa Onstad made a season-high nine saves.
