TACOMA, Wash. - The University of Puget Sound became the first team to score more than one goal against Willamette University this season, as the Loggers scored once in the first half, then added a goal at 81:20, sending UPS to a 2-1 victory over the Bearcats in a Northwest Conference game on Saturday. The game was played between two Top 25 teams in NCAA Division III, as UPS (#22) improved to 11-1-3 overall, 9-1-2 in the NWC. Willamette (#15) fell to 12-2-2 on the season, 9-2-1 in the NWC. UPS moved into first place in the NWC with the win. The Loggers have 29 points in the standings (3 for a win, 1 for tie). Willamette slipped to second place with 28 points. Both teams have four conference games remaining. The Loggers took a 1-0 lead at 17:00, when Katie Gillette scored from eight yards out. Adrienne Folsom, who sent a crossing pass to Gillette on the play, was credited with an assist. UPS outshot the Bearcats, 18-4, in the first half (7-2 on goal), but the score was still 1-0 at the intermission. Both teams took five shots in the second half. Willamette equalized when Meghan Anderson scored at 70:00. Anderson's shot went into the netting in the upper right corner of the goal. The go-ahead goal for the Loggers was recorded after Willamette's Michelle Gregoire was given her second yellow card of the game for a foul while tackling the ball about 30 yards from goal. Folsom took the free kick for UPS and scored her 13th goal of the season. Folsom has scored just over half of the Loggers' goals this season, as UPS has recorded 25 goals in 15 games. For the game, Puget Sound achieved a 23-9 advantage in shots, including 11-5 in shots on goal. Willamette goalkeeper Kari Woody was credited with nine saves for the Bearcats. USP goalie Kallie Wolfer registered four saves, with two in each half. Folsom led all players with seven shots during the game. Gillette added five shots for the Loggers. Willamette's Emily Gross earned three shots, while Laura Uhlmansiek took two shots for the Bearcats. UPS recorded nine corner kicks, including seven in the second half, and did not allow a corner kick by WU. Willamette returns to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Newberg, to take on George Fox University. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
