NEWBERG - Led by medalist Leslie Wheeler’s 81, the Linfield College Wildcats captured the first-ever home match in the brief history of George Fox University’s first-year women’s golf program, the George Fox Invitational, Sunday afternoon here at the Chehalem Glenn Golf Course.

Linfield posted a four-player score of 355 on the par 72, 5,818-yard course which opened 15 months ago. As the back nine of the new course will not be open until the summer of 2007, each team played the current nine-hole course twice.

Wheeler carded a score of 40-41=81 to edge Willamette’s Whitney Ueno, who shot a 42-41=83, for individual honors. Top scorers for the other three teams were Kelly Hartley of Pacific with an 87, Marianna Gordon of Lewis & Clark with a 90, and Nicole Hudson of George Fox with a 103.

The highlight shot of the day came from Pacific’s Le Anna Nash, who shot an eagle on the par 4, 372-yard 12th hole. She hit the green and had the ball roll into the cup on her second shot from 150 yards out.

Complete results of the inaugural George Fox Invitational are available at the George Fox women’s golf web site at www.georgefox.edu/athletics/womens_golf/index.html.
