Oregon’s Dieskova Advances to Round of 16 at ITA Regionals

In doubles action, the second-seeded pair of Dieskova and Olivos were upset in the quarterfinals by Stanford’s pair of Celia Durkin and Jessica Nguyen.

BERKELEY, Calif. - Dominika Dieskova is the only Duck still remaining in the main draw of the Northwest ITA Regionals, being held this weekend on the campus of the University of California.

While all of the Ducks that had first round byes yesterday won their second round matches, only Dieskova would remain after the round of 32. The fifth-seeded senior from Bratislava, Slovakia battled to a 6-2, 7-5 win over California’s Bojana Bobusic to advance.

In the rest of the round of 32, Claudia Hirt battled, but fell to No. 4 seeded Celia Durkin of Stanford, 5-7, 1-6. Senior Monica Hoz de Vila fell to the 14th seeded Nina Henkel of California, 1-6, 3-6 and sophomore Anna Powaska fell to the seventh-seeded Ekaterina Burduli of Washington State.

Earlier in the day, Dieskova fought through a first set tiebreak to win her round of 64 match 7-6(5), 6-3, while her fellow senior Monica Hoz de Vila cruised by Cal Poly’s Maria Malec, 6-1, 6-2.

Powaska was the only Duck forced into a three set match in the round of 64, but pulled out the victory, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Hirt also advanced after a 6-1, 6-2 win over Santa Clara’s Myra Davoudi.

The ITA Northwest Regional continues Sunday and Monday.
