Oct-23-2006 20:16College Cross Country: Ducks Ready For Saturday’s Pac-10 Championships at StanfordSalem-News.com SPORTS“The Farm” was the perennial host of the event 23 times over the span of 25 years from 1973-97, while Fresno, Calif., was the other site to host the event in 1978 and 1982. The event began a rotation among conference schools in 1998.
EUGENE - The University of Oregon men’s and women’s cross country teams open the postseason this weekend at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, hosted by Stanford University on the Stanford Golf Course on Saturday. The women’s 6,000-meter is set for a 10:00 AM start, and the men’s 8,000-meter race will begin at 11:00 AM. The two contests mark the 38th and 21st respective editions of the league finale, and return to the Stanford Golf Course for the first time since 1997. The top seven individuals from each race will claim All-Pac-10 First Team honors, and the next seven places earn All-Pac-10 Second Team distinction. Coaches will also vote on Pac-10 Men’s and Women’s Newcomer and Athlete of the Year awards after the season is over. The Oregon teams boast talented and youthful rosters again in 2006, as the men feature 10 Foot Locker national high school championships veterans on its 41-man unit, while the women sport five qualifiers on its 15-person squad. On the men’s side for Oregon, sophomores Galen Rupp and Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott have paced the men’s squad in their four prior contests this fall. The duo finished second and fourth, respectively, a month ago in the Bill Dellinger Invitational at Eugene’s Alton-Baker Park on Fri., Sept. 29 against a national-class race field that featured eight former top-50 NCAA finishers. In the same race, UO freshman Diego Mercado finished within 10 seconds of Kiptoo-Biwott and placed seventh overall, while graduate student and Princeton transfer Ben Stern and redshirt junior Carlos Trujillo also scored for UO and were top-20 finishers (15th/19th). Among other Duck men to watch, senior Patrick Werhane was an All-Pac-10 Second Team choice last year and 13th in the 2005 Pac-10 and West Regional Championships and an NCAA individual qualifier, junior Chris Winter has finished top-five for the Ducks in 10 of his 12 collegiate races in his career, including the 2005 Pac-10/West Regional finales (23rd/19th), and freshman Kenny Klotz has ranked top-four for the Ducks in two varsity stops this fall. The Duck women will feature a pair of top-20 West Regional finishers from last season up front – senior Dana Buchanan and sophomore Zoe Nelson (18th/19th) – while the duo reversed their positions on the team in last year’s Pac-10 chase (20th/16th). Junior Sarah Pearson has run in the team’s top four in all 12 of her career races, including league finales in 2005 and ’04 (18th/47th). Several other talented varsity newcomers will take advantage of the opportunity to challenge for a scoring spot, including freshmen Amanda Stopa and Lauren Zaludek and redshirt junior Liisa Heinonen. Stopa scored a best-ever fourth-place ranking on the team two weekends ago in the Mike Hodges Invitational at Clackamas (seventh overall, 5K 17:11), and was trailed closely by Zaludek (ninth, 17:26) and Heinonen (10th, 17:30). The Ducks are under the guidance of second-year director of track and field and associate athletic director Vin Lananna. Last year, the UO women enjoyed their most successful season in nearly a decade, thanks to top-four finishes in the Pac-10 and West Regional (third/fourth), and climbed as high as 22nd in the national polls. An equally youthful Duck men’s team placed sixth in the West Regional to just miss an NCAA invitation, and advanced Patrick Werhane as an individual to the NCAA Championships – UO’s 36th men’s postseason appearance - after the Beaverton, Ore., native finished 13th in the 2005 Pac-10 and West Regional contests. Lananna is no stranger to the Stanford Golf Course since he served as the Stanford director of track and field and cross country from the fall of 1992 through the spring of 2003. In that span, his Cardinal men claimed 14 Pac-10 Championships cross country team crowns (6M – 1996, ’97, ’98, 2000, ’01, ’02 / 8W – 1993, ’94, ’96, ’97, ’98, ’99, 2000, ’01, ‘02), along with six individual harrier crowns (3M - 2000, ’01, ’02 / 3W – 1999, 2001, ‘02). Since the inception of the Pac-10 women’s finale in 1986, the Oregon women own a conference-best eight individual crowns, edging Arizona (5) and Stanford (5), and team-wise, their seven team titles ranks second to Stanford (12). The Duck men have won 13 team Pac-10 team titles since 1969, far ahead of Stanford (10) and Arizona (7), and their nine individual titles trails only WSU’s Kenyan-heavy brigade (11). More info on the meet is available at the Pac-10 Conference’s website at the http://www.pac-10.org URL address, and also at the Stanford University’s www.GoStanford.com athletic department website. In their last competition in 2006, the Mike Hodges Invitational, Sat., Oct. 14 at Clackamas Community College in Portland, the Duck men and women won the university sections with scores of 15 points and 24 points, respectively. Individually, Galen Rupp cruised to an 18-second win in the 4-mile men’s race (18:40) over Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott (second, 18:58) and Carlos Trujillo (third, 18:58). Other top Duck men’s finishers included Kenny Klotz (fourth, 19:08) and Diego Mercado (fourth, 19:08), Chris Winter (seventh, 19:18) and Patrick Werhane (eighth, 19:19). In the women’s 5,000-meter race, Dana Buchanan and Zoe Nelson took second (16:47) and third (16:49), respectively. Other Duck entries included Sarah Pearson (sixth, 17:07), Lauren Zaludek (ninth, 17:26), Liisa Heinonen (10th, 17:30) and Berkley Aldinger-Gibson (15th, 18:06). Looking ahead, the Ducks will contend for NCAA Championships invites in two weeks in the NCAA West Regional Championships at Blue Lake Park in Portland, Nov. 11th. In each of the nation’s nine regionals, the top-two team finishers and top four individuals not on a qualifying team automatically advance to the NCAA finale, scheduled for Mon., Nov. 20th at Indiana State University’s LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Another 13 at-large teams and two at-large individuals will be added to the 31-team, 255-runner M&W fields on Mon., Nov. 13th. At-large team selection criteria is based on teams’ head-to-head records against other actual and potential NCAA qualifiers.
