Oct-28-2006 01:31Sprague Wins Central Valley Title, Saxons Beat McNary on Last Second TouchdownKevin Hays Salem-News.com SPORTSIn the 5A Mid-Willamette Conference, West Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon, and Dallas make the state playoffs.
SALEM - Make it six straight for the Sprague Olympians and the Central Valley Conference crown after a 14-7 hard fought win over the North Salem Vikings Friday night at Sprague. The season has been a year of ups and downs for both teams. The Olympians (6-3 overall, 5-0 CVC) opened the season with three straight losses, and most wrote the team off of making another appearance in the state playoffs. Now after week nine, a six game winning streak, Sprague can sweep the CVC with a win next week at South Salem. For the Vikings (4-5 overall, 2-3 CVC) they must win next week at home against Redmond to make the playoffs. North won the 53rd annual “Mayor’s Cup” against South Salem, and last week ended an 11-game losing streak against McNary with a 31-14 victory at home. However North is 2-4 in it’s last six games and three tough conference losses to West Salem, McKay and now Sprague puts the Vikings in a must win situation. West Salem has clinched no worse than the conferences #2 seed. The Titans (5-3 overall, 4-1 CVC) lost a tough non-conference home game 21-16 against #7 Lake Oswego (7-2 overall, 5-0 Tri-River Conference). For McNary fans Friday nights home game against South Salem was bitter after learning earlier in the day that head coach Tom Smythe will retire at the end of the season, and then losing to the Saxons 17-15 on a last second touchdown pass. South quarterback Doug Bloom rolled out to his left and launched a 25-yard touchdown strike to Zach Dufault, that gave the Saxons their first conference win of the year. With the win the Saxons move their record to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in conference action. The loss drops McNary to 2-7 overall, and 0-5 in the CVC. Redmond (5-4 overall, 3-2 CVC) took one step forward towards the state playoffs with a 34-7 win against McKay. The Royal Scots end conference play with a 3-3 record and need a Redmond win next week in order to make the playoffs. If the season ended Friday night the playoffs would look like this: #1 CVC Sprague off (Plays winner of Southwest #4 - Mt. Hood #2) #2 West Salem home versus #3 Southwest Conference (South Eugene or Roseburg) #3 Redmond on the road versus #3 PIL Conference (Wilson) #4 McKay on the road versus #1 Southwest Conference (Grants Pass 9-0) In the Willamette Valley Conference: Lebanon is in the 5-A state playoffs with a 63-8 blowout win over Woodburn. The Warriors meet Dallas next Friday in Dallas, the winner gets the Conferences #3 seed, the loser the #4 seed. The Dragons (4-4 overall, 4-2 MWC) were rolled by #1 West Albany, 46-14.
