Oct-29-2006 23:13Women’s Soccer: Wolves take down Crusaders, 2-1Salem-News.com SPORTSWestern Oregon finishes 2006 season with a win to make them an even .500 on the season (9-9-2).
NAMPA, Idaho - Katy McNutt tied the game in the 85th minute, but the Crusaders couldn't hold on as Western Oregon defeated Northwest Nazarene 2-1 in the final Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match of the season for both teams on Saturday in Nampa. McNutt, who leads the GNAC in goals scored with 11, evened the score at 1-1 when Hilary Hughes one-touched a header to her just 10-yards in front of the goal. She finished the shot on the ground to the right side, as Hughes re-direct came from the foot of Crusaders goalkeeper Amanda Merrell after she launched a punt from the top of the NNU goal box that found her just 20-yards in front of the WOU goal. Western Oregon (9-9-2) had opened the scoring in the 49th minute when Chelsea Glavin scored her first goal of the season. Glavin took a mid-field crossing pass from Maggie Kuzmer and beat Merrell to the left side. The teams had gone to the break in a scoreless tie, with WOU holding a slight shot advantage at 4-3. WOU ended the game out-shooting the Crusaders 13-12 with NNU holding a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The Wolves would net the game winner just 37-seconds after McNutt's goal, as Kylee Krous connected with Claire Pendleton up the middle. Pendleton's shot to the left half of the goal skipped past Merrell for her first goal of the season. Merrell made four saves for the Crusaders, while WOU keeper Ally Meyer grabbed five. The Crusaders finish the season at 8-11 overall and 2-8 in GNAC play.
