Oct-05-2006 10:21Corban College Women’s Volleyball Weekly DigestSalem-News.com SPORTSFollowing an unfortunate six match losing streak, Corban turned things around last week thanks to victories over non-conference Northwest Christian, conference member Cascade, and conference member Warner Pacific.
SALEM - THIS WEEK: After a pair of home matches last week, Corban’s women’s volleyball team hits the road and heads to the state of Washington for back-to-back conference matches. The Warriors will kick off the weekend with the Eagles of Northwest on Friday in Kirkland, and then conclude against the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College on Saturday in Olympia. Both matches will begin at 7:00 PM. SERIES NOTES: Corban and Northwest have met 38 times in the series history with the Warriors winning 28-out-of-38 matches, but dropped the meeting earlier this season between the two teams, 3-2 (30-18, 30-28, 25-30, 22-30, 15-10). Corban and Evergreen have squared off 12 times in the series history, as the Warriors hold the advantage, 8-4. Earlier this season, the Geoducks defeated the Warriors, 3-1 (30-26, 22-30, 30-25, 30-22), in Salem. LAST WEEK: On Tuesday, the Warriors took a mini-break from their conference schedule with a match against future Cascade Collegiate Conference member Northwest Christian. Meeting for the first-time ever, the Warriors handed the host Beacons a four-game loss (30-14, 17- 30, 30-27, 31-29). Sophomore Jessica McGraw recorded her fourth tripledouble of the season thanks to 10 kills, a match-high 26 assists, and 12 digs. Fellow sophomore Chelsea Reeher led Corban with 13 kills, while junior Ashley Lange added 11 kills and hit a team-best .333 (11-3-24). Senior libero Becky Horn provided the defense with a match-high 32 digs, while seniors Hallie Hofferd and Nina Clanton registered 19 and 17 respectively. Kicking off the weekend, Corban hosted fellow conference member Cascade and continued two streaks – current winning streak and consecutive victories over the Thunderbirds – with a three-game sweep (30-11, 30-10, 30-23) to earn its first conference victory of the season. Junior Caylin Goss, Reeher, and McGraw led all players with 8 kills each, while Hofferd and Clanton added 7 and 6 respectively. McGraw guided Corban’s offense with a match-high 24 assists, while Horn registered a match-high 21 digs. As a team, the Warriors served 19 aces – which was a mere 2 shy of the school record – with Horn providing 7 of her own. On Saturday, the Warriors welcomed the Knights of Warner Pacific and Corban alum Ashley Walbridge, who is currently an assistant coach at WPC. In what seemed to be the best match of the season, the Warriors snapped a streak of twelve straight five-game matches that they have come out on the losing end thanks to a 3-2 (23-30, 30-23, 28-30, 30- 28, 15-13) win. Clanton led Corban with 19 kills, while Hofferd and Reeher added 14 and 13 respectively. Freshman setter Amy Thompson guided the Warrior offense with a team-high 30 assists, while registering her second career double-double with 13 digs. Horn led a defensive effort that saw the Warriors record 112 digs, as she registered a match-high 40. RECORD PACE: Senior libero Becky Horn has recorded a team-high 458 digs in 16 matches (avg. 28.6 per match) so far this season. Last season, Horn provided a team-best 499 digs in 18 matches (avg. 27.7 per match) and averaged a school-record 6.24 digs per game. Currently, Horn sits 9th on the all-time career digs chart with 957 and is a mere 18 away from passing Chris Neely (1997-2000) for 8th. With eight matches remaining, Horn could end the season with 1,186 digs, which would place her as the all-time leader for career digs in just two seasons.
