Oct-07-2006 10:39#16 California Defeats Oregon State, 5-0Salem-News.com SPORTSOSU, which dropped its fourth straight game to open Pac-10 play, next hosts Stanford on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
CORVALLIS - Five different California men’s soccer players scored goals as the 16th-ranked Golden Bears defeated Oregon State, 5-0, in Pacific-10 Conference action on Friday night at Lorenz Field. The Golden Bears (7-3-1, 2-1-0) defeated the Beavers (5-6-1, 0-4-0) for the fifth straight game and had a season high for goals. It didn’t take long at all for Cal to get on the board. Javier Ayala-Hil took the ball down the right side, and centered to the ball to Jacob Wilson at the right edge of the eight-yard box. Wilson turned with the ball and shot high and hard into the net just 1:03 into the game. It was his second goal of the season. It became 2-0 in the 13th minute. Luke Sassano did a tremendous job dribbling the ball down the right side and taking on the Beaver defense. He reached the end line, then headed toward goal. He managed to keep control of the ball under pressure, then sent a ball into the middle of the box. It went to teammate Eric Ebert, who one-timed it home from about 15 yards away for his third goal of the season. OSU got stronger as the half went on and started racking up corner kicks, crosses and through-ball attempts, but the Golden Bear defense was in position to thwart all attacks. Cal goalkeeper Justin Myers stopped OSU senior forward Bryan Jordan on a breakaway early in the contest. The Golden Bears scored their third goal in the 41st minute on an unfortunate defensive error. A backpass went to the Beaver goalkeeper, and when he tried to trap the ball instead of kicking it away, Cal’s Andrew Jacobson was right there to take it away from him and score easily into an open net. It was his second goal of the season. The Beavers had few second-half chances, but Myers stopped a good one when he made a diving save to his right to push away a blast by OSU sophomore midfielder Collin Foster with 10 minutes left. It looked like Oregon State might get through the second half unscathed, but the Beavers gave away another goal in the 82nd minute. Pat Marion took the ball away from an OSU defender at the right side of the box, then dribbled into position to shoot past the goalkeeper. He scored his first goal of the season. The final goal came in the final minute, at 89:07. On a counter, Josh Leon popped a ball forward to the edge of the box, and Matt Holtrust ran onto it and blasted one into the net for his second goal of the season. Goals: Jacob Wilson (Javier Ayala-Hil), CAL, 1:03; Eric Ebert (Luke Sassano), CAL, 12:35; Andrew Jacobson, CAL, 40:57; Pat Marion, CAL, 81:49; Matt Holtrust (Josh Leon), CAL, 89:07.
