PALO ALTO, Calif - Swimming at Stanford University for the first time ever, the Oregon State women’s swimming team split its 2006-07 season opening dual meet with the Cardinal and the San Jose State Spartans. The Beavers (1-1, 0-1 Pacific-10) defeated the Spartans (0-2) 99-39 and fell to the Cardinal (2-0, 1-0 Pacific-10) 45-92.

“It was a good showing for us in our first dual meet of the season,” OSU head coach Larry Liebowitz said. “I was very impressed with what I saw and overall it was an outstanding meet.”

In her first collegiate meet, freshman Megan Evans wasted little time placing herself in the OSU record books. Her second place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:20.13) was the sixth fastest time in school history. Evans later led a 1-2-3 finish for the Beavers in the 200 yard International Medley.

Evans was one of three swimmers to earn dual meet wins today. Felicia Castaneda picked up her 14th career dual meet win in the 100 yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:05.59 is the seventh best in school history.

Saori Haruguchi, who won 15 events as a freshman, picked up the win in the 100 yard butterfly. Haruguchi’s time of 55.75 is the fourth fastest in school history. Haruguchi now has 16 career dual meet wins, which places her in a tie for 18th place on the Beavers’ all-time list.

The Beavers finished the day by winning the 200 yard freestyle relay by 1.31 seconds. The team of Erika Wirth, Anna Crandall, Kayla Rawlings, and Brittney Iverson combined to swim the Beavers to victory in the final event of the day.

“The scores were very similar and the girls had the right attitude coming in,” Liebowitz said. “It was a very difficult meet but everyone did a great job.”
