TEMPE, Ariz. - The Oregon State women’s soccer team defeated Arizona State in overtime for the third straight year, as freshman midfielder Melissa Peck scored on a header in the 97th minute, leading the Beavers to a 2-1 road victory in the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both teams on Friday night.

OSU (8-2-2 overall, 1-0 Pac-10) had beaten ASU (5-4-2 overall, 0-1 Pac-10) by 1-0 scores in each of the last two years. Junior forward Jodie Taylor scored game-winners in the 96th minute in Tempe in 2005 and in the 109th minute in Corvallis in 2004.

Tonight, junior midfielder Jetta Sadusky sent in a cross from the right side, and Peck headed it in for her second career goal at 96:22.

“I thought we played very well tonight,” OSU Coach Steve Fennah said. “This was a great win to open the Pac-10. We were very disciplined defensively. Kelli Washburn was outstanding in the middle. She owned everything in the air, moved the ball around and kept possession. It was a commanding performance by Monica Storm in the middle of the defense. Now we need to get ourselves refocused and ready to get a result at Arizona on Sunday.”

The Beavers opened the scoring in the 51st minute on what Fennah called “a brilliant goal” by sophomore midfielder Kelsey Provo. Freshman midfielder Najma Homidi crossed the ball in from the right side, and Provo slammed the ball home. It was Provo’s third goal of the season.

ASU, however, tied the game in the 84th minute on a Carly Kallas goal.

Goals: Kelsey Provo (Najma Homidi), OSU, 50:03; Carly Kallas (Kylla Sjoman), ASU, 83:20; Melissa Peck (Jetta Sadusky), OSU, 96:22.
