SALEM - Pacific University defeated Willamette University, 3-1, in a Northwest Conference game at Sparks Field in Salem Saturday afternoon. Pacific improved to 6-2-1 overall, including 3-2-1 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 1-9-1 overall, 0-5-1 in the NWC. Pacific scored twice in the first 10 minutes. Matt McDonough recorded the opening goal just 1:47 into the game on a shot from eight yards that went off the left post, then off a defender near the right post. Colby White earned an assist on the play. Danny Williams hit the net on a 10-yard header at the 8:34 mark, after receiving a lengthy pass from Derek Atta, who was near the center of the field. Atta received an assist on the goal. The Boxers increased the lead to 3-0 at 51:59, when McDonnough's shot from about 16 yards out, glanced off a defender just enough to send it past goalkeeper Mark Bennett. Bennett was ready to stop the shot in the middle of the goal, but the deflection sent it to the his left and into the net. Willamette's goal was scored at 88:57 by Thomas Cloutier with an assist from Mikey Rodriguez. It was Willamette's first score since a goal by Trevor Jones at the 12:53 mark in the Bearcats' 4-1 loss at Whitworth on Sept. 17. Since then, Willamette had gone 436 minutes and 4 seconds without a goal. Pacific achieved a 16-11 advantage in total shots. The Boxers also held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Willamette earned six corner kicks, while the Boxers received just one corner kick. Bennett registered four saves for the Bearcats. Pacific's starting goalie, Jory Shene, played 73:01 and provided one save, before giving way to Chris Caswell, who also earned one save.
