Western Oregon Golfers Fair Well at Final Tune-Up

The Wolves and Whitworth shared first place on the men's side with 46 points, while the women trailed only Pirate women, 53 to 61.

TACOMA, Wash. - Western Oregon's men tied for first and the WOU women captured second Saturday at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational, run at the golf course on the PLU campus.

The race was the final tune-up for Western Oregon before the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships, which will be held Oct. 21st in Lacey, Wash.

Freshman Mike Schmidt was WOU's top male runner, crossing the line in second place behind Linfield's Harrison Wilson. Wilson won in 25:14 on the eight kilometer course, while Schmidt ran 25:28. Senior Nick Crawford was next for the Wolves in fourth place (25:36), and Braxton Jackson was also in the top ten at 25:58.

The WOU women placed five runners in the top 20, led by freshman Alee Rowley's sixth place finish. Rowlee ran the six kilometer course in 22:57. Shirlon Moncrief was the next WOU finisher in tenth (23:11.7).

"Our freshmen really did a great job today," said WOU head coach Mike Johnson. "They continue to improve, we are laying the foundation for some good things. We still have a ways to go, but the future is bright for this group."
