Sep-01-2006 22:38Beavers and Cal State Northridge Win at OSU Nike InvitationalSalem-News.com SPORTSPlay continues on Sunday with Cal State Northridge (2-1) and Northern Colorado (1-1) meeting at 11:00 AM, followed by OSU (1-1-1) against UAB (0-2) at 1:00 PM.
CORVALLIS - The Oregon State women’s soccer team dominated Northern Colorado but settled for a 1-0 victory at the OSU Nike Invitational on Friday evening. In the first game at Lorenz Field, Cal State Northridge scored on a late penalty kick to beat UAB, 1-0. The Beavers controlled the first half, both in terms of possession and the shot totals (12-2), but it took until the 38th minute for them to find the back of the net. Freshman defender Red Nixon sent a ball in from her left back position, and freshman forward Jessica Velazquez brought it down inside the box, dribbled once to her left and rifled a shot past the goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal. The second half was more of the same, with OSU outshooting Northern Colorado 11-1 (a total of 23-3 for the game), but the Beavers were unable to get on the scoreboard again. Junior forward Jodie Taylor had a number of near-misses among her six shots attempted. Northern Colorado goalkeeper Chrissy Marvin kept things close by making 10 saves. She also had her team’s only shot on goal with a long free kick in the first half. OSU senior goalkeeper Melissa Onstad needed to make only one save to earn her first shutout of the season and the 20th of her career, extending her own school record. Cal State Northridge won the first game thanks to a 74th-minute penalty kick by Sara Davis. The penalty kick was set up by Farryn Townley, who was tripped up as she made a run with the ball down the middle of the box. UAB’s Danya Barsalona gave her team some of its best chances to score, as in the second half she had a header go just wide, and later had a shot cleared off the line by the CSUN defense.
