Sep-14-2006 19:19McDonough's Last Second Goal Beats PioneersSalem-News.com SPORTSPacific will now test its undefeated record against Northwest Conference teams, traveling Saturday to face Pacific Lutheran in both team's conference opener.
FOREST GROVE - Matt McDonough provided the last-minute heroics for Pacific Wednesday, scoring a solo goal with 34 seconds left as the Boxers bounced Cal State East Bay 1-0 in men's soccer action at Tom Reynolds Field. Following an attempt for the Boxers from the far side of the pitch, McDonough was able to swipe the ball from a Pioneers' defender. He quickly moved around the defender's left side and put the ball into the far corner past out of position Pioneers' goalkeeper Sergio Valle. The goal was the second of the season for McDonough and secured the third win of the young campaign for the Boxers (3-0-0). The victory also surpasses Pacific's total of two wins from the 2005 season. The late goal closed out a physical affair between the two sides with 39 fouls called and four cards issued. Cal State East Bay (0-4-0) received three of the cards, which included a red card to Jordan Farrell in the 37th minute. Despite the man advantage, the Boxers found themselves frustrated by a fast and skilled Pioneers team. Cal State East Bay outshot the Boxers 12-10 on the day. Pacific goalkeeper Jory Shene made fives saves on the afternoon to record his second shutout of the season. Valle also made five stops in the loss for the Pioneers.
