Gillis has been on an amazing roll since early this summer, as he won three major Northwest amateur events: the 2006 Oregon Amateur, the Oregon Men’s Stroke Play Championship and the PNGA Public Links Championship.

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN - Oregon State senior golfer Mitch Gillis won the season-opening Wolverine Intercollegiate by two strokes, posting his first college victory and continuing an impressive series of results, at the University of Michigan Golf Course on Sunday.

Though he shot a 1-over 72 today, it was enough for Gillis (Williams Lake, B.C.) to maintain the two-shot lead that he started the day with. He finished with a 6-under-par 207 (65-70-72). The 207 ties for the fourth-lowest score in school history.

“It feels great,” Gillis said. “I’m excited. I don’t think I performed as well as I could have, but getting the win feels awesome. In the first round I putted well, though I was a little off with my speed the next two rounds. I hit the ball great all weekend. The course played harder today because of the wind. But I had a lot of tap-ins for par today and made it pretty easy for myself.”

The Beavers entered the day in a tie for third, but slipped to a tie for fifth place with Eastern Michigan at 866 after shooting a 296 today. OSU finished 15 strokes behind the winner, Wisconsin.

Freshman Diego Velasquez playing in his first college tournament, shot 72-71-73 and tied for 17th with a 3-over-par 216. OSU’s other golfers, sophomore Alex Williams, junior Jeremiah Oliver and junior Christian Green tied for 41st, 58th and 69th, respectively.
