CORVALLIS - The University of Denver women’s golf team put together an excellent first day of golf to take a 10-stroke lead at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational, hosted by Oregon State at Trysting Tree Golf Club, on Monday. The Pioneers’ Stephanie Sherlock leads the tournament by one stroke. Play continues at the par-72, 6,271-yard course with the third and final round on Tuesday . Tee times begin at 7:30 AM, with the top three teams (Denver, Long Beach State and UC Davis) starting at 8:50 AM on the first tee. Denver (291-295) was the only team to post sub-300 scores in both of today’s rounds, and their 586 was 10 strokes better than second-place Long Beach State’s 596. Four of Denver’s five players are in the top 15. Long Beach State (290-306) had a one-stroke lead after the morning’s first round. UC Davis (300-302) stands in third at 602, while the host Beavers (299-304) and Washington State (299-304) are tied for fourth at 603, 17 strokes behind Denver. Sherlock shot a 1-under-par 71 in both rounds to finish the day at a 2-under 142. UC Irvine’s Selanee’ Henderson had the best afternoon round, a 3-under-par 69, to jump into a tie for second place at 1-under 143. She’s tied with Long Beach State’s Kay Hoey and UC Riverside’s Jennifer Bermingham. Colorado’s Julie Kim shot the best round of the day, a 5-under 67 in the morning, but her 77 in the afternoon dropped her into fifth place at an even-par 144. Oregon State’s top golfer was junior Jillian Ferrante, who is tied for eighth at 147. The Beavers’ team begins play on Tuesday at 8:10 a.m. on the first tee with Washington State and Fresno State. Sherlock and Oregon State freshman Lauren Archer (who is competing in her first college tournament) each had a tournament-high nine birdies Monday. Archer is tied for 25th. Team Scores: 1.
