CHICO, Calif. - It wasn’t a loss, and it wasn’t a win, but it felt like near-mission accomplished for the Western Oregon women’s soccer team on Friday night during a 0-0 tie with Chico State.

The Wolves battled the Wildcats tooth and nail for 110 minutes before settling for the deadlock, withstanding 31 Chico State shots, including 10 on goal. The hosts out-shot their visitors 31-8 and 10-3 (on goal), but when the long evening was over, both teams left the field in the same place.

The result left Chico State, ranked No. 25 in the NSCAA/adidas national NCAA Division II poll, at 0-1-2 on the season. Western Oregon moves to 0-1-1.

The Wildcats, a playoff team that past two seasons, are picked to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s North Division.

Two of Chico State’s best scoring opportunities came in overtime. In the 95th minute, Heather Gravett set up Courtney Quan with a golden chance from 12 yards out, but Quan’s shot sailed high. In the 106th minute, Courtney Nelson curled a shot toward the far post from 25 yards out that looked to be ticketed for the side netting, but Wolves goalkeeper Ally Meyer made a last-second dive to deflect it wide.

Meyer finished with 10 saves on the night. Offensively, seven different players took shots for the Wolves, two of them by Amy Weberg.
