Wolves Split Matches on Final Day of Alamo City Classic

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. - Western Oregon defeated Chadron State in the morning match, but fell to Ferris State in three games to wrap up play at the Alamo City Classic in San Antonio, Texas.

The Wolves will return home with a 2-8 overall record, heading into Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. They will travel to Western Washington on Thursday, and host Saint Martin's on Saturday.

WOU ended play at the Alamo with a 1-3 record, falling to Ferris State 31-20, 30-26, 30-17. The Michigan school improved to 8-1 on the year with the victory.

Shakira Jenkins led the Wolves with 10 kills, while Lisa Martini added eight. Claire Carpenter had 20 digs in the three-game match, which was played under protest by WOU coach Joe Houck, because of an illegal substitution call.

Earlier in the day, Western Oregon overcame a heartbreaking loss in game one, battling back to win three straight games during a 29-31, 30-20, 30-21, 30-12 win over Chadron State.

The win was the first in three tries for the Wolves on this Texas road trip. The victory improved their mark to 2-7 on the year, while the Nebraska school fell to 0-9.

WOU bounced back from a close loss in the first game and rolled through the Eagles after that. The freshman Martini hit .405 and pounded out 20 kills to lead the offense, while Shakira Jenkins added 11 kills. Keyanna Jenkins zipped in four service aces and had 13 digs, while Carpenter contributed 23 digs. As a team, WOU hit .226 on the day, and had 11 aces.
