Sep-24-2006 23:40Oregon Sets Defensive Record Versus IdahoSalem-News.com SPORTSThe Ducks next head to the Rose City to play Portland State Friday at 4:00 PM and the University of Portland on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
EUGENE - Oregon’s defense set a school record by holding Idaho to just one shot attempt and Nicole Garbin and Megan Watson each scored as the Ducks defeated Idaho 2-0 Sunday in front of 627 fans at Pape’ Field. The Ducks (5-4-0) broke the previous defensive mark of two shot attempts set versus Oklahoma in 1996. "I felt our defense played well, especially in the middle with (goalkeeper) Emily Zaler, Nicole Dobrzynski and Dylann Tharp," said Oregon coach Tara Erickson. "We’re pleased to get a win at home and turn momentum back in our favor. "But I felt that we did not play up to our potential in terms of creating chances and possessing the ball," said Erickson. "We’ll have to fix some things. We had moments that we connected passes pretty well, but too many moments where our timing was really off." In the 19th minute, Allison Newton sent a perfect cross to Garbin, who headed the ball past Idaho’s Anna Sandman from six yards out for the game’s first goal. It was the second straight game with an assist for Newton, a sophomore from Eugene, Ore., who also assisted on Watson’s second half goal. Garbin collected her fourth goal of the season and 26th career goal. She also extended her own school record with her 16th career game-winning goal. With 67 career points on 26 goals and 15 assists, the senior from Wailuku, Hawaii, moved within two of Chalise Baysa’s school record of 69 (1998-01). Ashley Irish got Idaho’s lone shot attempt in the 82nd minute when she kicked a high ball on net from 23 yards out that Zaler made a routine save on. It was the only save of the game for Zaler, who earned her third shutout of the season. The win snapped Oregon’s school-record six-game losing streak at Pape’ Field that dated back to last season. Idaho fell to 0-11-0 on the year. GAME NOTES: Garbin moved to within five goals of Baysa’s UO career record 31 (1998-01)...Garbin’s four consecutive games with a point (3G, 1A) is one off Sierra Marsh’s school record of five consecutive games with a point (all assists) from the 1997 season...Newton’s five career assists are tied for 10th on the UO list...Sweeney recorded her second assist of the year...this was the first Oregon game this season not to be decided by one goal...Jen Cameron suffered a right ankle injury in the second half and did not return...the sophomore from Tigard, Ore., will have x-rays taken on Monday and be reevaluated...freshman midfielder Rianna Mansfield missed her sixth straight game with a sore hip flexor.
