Linfield, Whitman Play to Scoreless Tie

Linfield stays at home to play Lewis & Clark Saturday, at noon before traveling to play Willamette, Sunday in Salem. Goalkeepers were key in this game. Linfield’s Allison Cartmill made 14 saves overall, and was under siege most of the second half, when she made eight. Whitman’s Erica Goad made 10 saves.

McMINNVILLE - Despite being a player down for 51 minutes in 80-degree sun, Linfield tied Whitman 0-0 in two overtimes Sunday in Northwest Conference women’s soccer.

Linfield, which has not won a conference game since the middle of last season, is 0-2-2 in the Northwest Conference and 2-4-2 overall. Whitman is 1-2-1 in the NWC and 1-3-1 overall.

Goalkeepers were key in this game.

Linfield’s Allison Cartmill made 14 saves overall, and was under siege most of the second half, when she made eight.

Whitman’s Erica Goad made 10 saves.

Whitman came within inches of winning at the buzzer ending regulation when Kristen Berndt’s header bounded off the cross bar over Cartmill’s head.

Linfield’s closest shot was by Rachel Miles in the 88th minute; a Whitman defender blocked it.

Among Cartmill’s cheer-evoking stops were: A block with her right foot with 30 seconds left in regulation; Three saves on Sammie Arthur, including a point-blank shot after Arthur’s long, undefended run up the middle in the 18th minute and a stop of an open 6-yarder.

Four saves on Corina Gabbert, including a diving smother in the 24th minute; Two within 10 seconds in the 73rd minute, the second a diving grab of a close rebound shot.

A catch of Alysee Ginkel’s bullet in the box; In the first overtime, Linfield co-captain Stephanie Caster blocked a close shot by Arthur.

Whitman took 22 shots to Linfield’s 21, but put 14 on goal to Linfield’s 10, requiring Cartmill to rise up repeatedly.

Linfield played the last 51 minutes with 10 players, after Amber Calcagno was ejected for punching a Whitman player when both were on the ground.

Linfield extended its conference winless string from last season to 10 games. The Wildcats are scoreless in their last four games this year, including two 0-0 ties.
