Linfield, Wheeler Second at Wildcat Invitational

Linfield plays the third round of the five-round NWC South fall-tournament on Sunday, Oct. 1st, at Chehalem Glenn course.

McMINNVILLE - Linfield took second place and Leslie Wheeler tied for second in at 81 in the individual standings at the new Wildcat Invitational women’s golf tournament Monday at Michelbook Country Club.

Concordia of Portland won with a score of 327 by its lowest four scorers. Linfield’s top four shot 361. Brittany Johnston was second lowest Wildcat shooter with 86.

Linfield beat all four Northwest Conference teams that were entered.

Medalist was Concordia junior Lisa Schmidt of Bend, who shot her second best collegiate score of 79. “I was hitting greens and getting mainly pars,” she said.

It was Schmidt’s first win since a couple her freshman year, including one that finished at Michelbook.

Concordia’s Lindsay Aho tied with Wheeler for second place at 81.

Concordia, which claimed three of the first four places Monday, set a school four-player record of 312 strokes last week at a tournament in Edmonds, Okla.

Wheeler said her drives, including a 220-yarder, were the best part of her game Monday. She made four pars on the back nine.

Willamette sophomore Whitney Ueno, one of the top returning players in the Northwest Conference who dueled with Wheeler all last season did not compete in the tournament. Ueno, last competed at the September 16th meet at Pacific and shot an 84 to tie for second.
