CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men’s soccer team fell in a 2-0 heartbreaker to Northern Illinois Friday night in front of a packed house at Paul Lorenz Field in the second game of the Hensor/Zaher Memoiral Classic. “I thought our guys played really tough,” Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said after the game. “It’s one of those games that if you win, it’s not as good as it looks, and if you lose, than it’s not as bad as it looks. There are a lot of positives from this game.” One of those positives is that the Beavers (3-2-2 overall) had their chances early in the game. They posted 14 shots for the game, 11 coming in the first half. There were several times where their shot either went off the goalpost or the crossbar. Northern Illinois (4-3-1) goalkeeper Jordan Godsey had six saves in the game with five of them coming off shots in the first half. The Huskies got on the board late in the first half when Juan Hoyos beat an Oregon State defender and punched the ball past the diving goalkeeper for his first goal of the season. Northern Illinois added another goal in the 75th minute by Brad Horton assisted by Danny Lopez to bring the score to 2-0. Beaver midfielder Mike Parker had three of his four shots go on goal which were all saved by Godsey. The match Friday saw new Oregon State head coach Simmons matched up against his former team in Northern Illinois He left last year to take up his new post. Simmons was replaced by his former assistant Eric Luzzi. “I’m so happy for him,” Simmons said of Luzzi following the match. “He is doing a great job with the program.” The Beavers take the field again in the Hensor/Zaher Memorial Classic finale when they take on the Red Foxes of Marist College Sunday Sept. 27 at 1:00 p.m.
