Willamette Women’s Soccer Team Moves up to #6 in NCAA Division III National Rankings

The Bearcats, 7-0-1, replace Puget Sound at the top of the West Region Rankings.

SALEM - The Willamette University women’s soccer team has moved up to #6 in this week’s NCAA Division III National Rankings, released Tuesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

The Bearcats, who are 7-0-1 on the season and 4-0-0 in the Northwest Conference, were ranked #18 last week.

Willamette went 2-0 during the week, including a 3-0 win over the University of Puget Sound on Sunday at Sparks Field. The loss dropped UPS from #3 to #17 in the national rankings. WU also won at Lewis & Clark College, 3-0, on Saturday.

The Bearcats are now #1 in the West Region Rankings, with UPS falling from #1 to #3. The University of California-Santa Cruz, tied for #2 in the region with Willamette last week, remained #2 this week. Whitworth College currently ranks #4 in the region.

The Northwest Conference is represented by three teams in the NCAA Division III National Rankings. In addition to Willamette at #6 and UPS at #17, Whitworth moved into the rankings at #25.

Willamette is at home on Wednesday, when the Bearcats will take on George Fox University in an NWC contest at 7:00 PM.

The Bearcats will continue their four-game homestand against Linfield College on Sunday at noon. The homestand will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 7th, against Pacific University at noon..

So far this season, Willamette has allowed only two goals in eight games.

Goalkeeper Kari Woody has achieved a goals against average of 0.26, with 30 saves, five solo shutouts and one shared shutout. She has played 695 of the team’s 740 minutes and has received the NWC Defensive Player of the Week award each of the past two weeks. The Bearcats have earned a team goals against average of 0.24.
