SALEM - Willamette University limited George Fox University to one shot on goal, as the Bearcats recorded their third consecutive shutout and seventh shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Bruins, in a Northwest Conference game on Wednesday.

The Bearcats, ranked #6 in NCAA Division III, upped their overall record to 8-0-1 with the victory at Sparks Field. Willamette also moved to 5-0-0 atop the NWC standings. George Fox is now 3-4-1 overall, 1-3-1 in the NWC.

With the shutout, Willamette extended its steak of scoreless defense to 357:16. The last goal scored against the Bearcats was on Sept. 17, when Whitworth took an early 1-0 lead on a goal just 2:44 in to the contest. Willamette answered with three goals in the first half and took a 3-1 win over the Pirates. Since then, WU had defeated Lewis & Clark College, 3-0, and the University of Puget Sound, 3-0, before facing the Bruins.

Bearcats senior goalkeeper Kari Woody recorded one save, as she increased her personal total of complete-game shutouts to six on the season. She also played the first 45 minutes in Willamette’s other shutout win. Woody has been the goalkeeper of record for the Bearcats in all nine game this year.

The game was 0-0 at halftime, but Willamette held a 10-4 edge in total shots and a 4-1 margin in shots on goal. GFU’s only shot on goal was taken by Bethany Zirschky at 23:51.

In the second half, WU achieved a decisive 12-1 advantage in total shots, while not allowing a shot on goal. Freshman forward Rachel Janny put the Bearcats into the lead when she scored on a rebound at 64:12. The goal occurred following a corner kick by Emily Gross, who sent the ball inside the penalty box to Jessica Lammers. Lammers headed the pass toward the goal, but it bounced off the crossbar. Janny took the rebound and scored, with Lammers earning an assist.

The Bearcats increased their lead to 2-0 with just under 10 minutes remaining on a goal by Susan Butler.

Butler shot from 23 yards, sending the ball over the goalie and into the net at 80:44. Meghan Anderson received an assist on the play.

Butler has played in eight games this fall and has scored a goal in six of her eight appearances. Anderson has recorded a goal or an assist in five consecutive game.

George Fox goalkeeper Jessica Cardwell earned six saves. Cardwell also received the game’s only yellow card, as she was booked after touching the ball outside the penalty area less than a minute after Willamette’s first goal.

Up next: The Bearcats will host Linfield College on Sunday at noon.
