LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Junior midfielder Hiroshi Nishito scored in his Oregon State debut, helping send the Beaver men’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory at UNLV on Sunday afternoon in the UNLV adidas Invitational.

Nishito (Tokyo, Japan) redshirted last year and didn’t play in the Beavers’ first three games this season. His goal in the 66th minute broke a scoreless tie, and sophomore midfielder Josh Cameron (Gresham, Ore./Centennial HS) and sophomore forward Robby Christner (Springfield, Ore./Thurston HS) followed with goals in the 81st and 86th minutes, respectively.

The win provided a nice bounce back from Friday’s 1-0 loss to Denver, in which OSU dominated play and outshot the Pioneers 10-4. The Beavers had a 15-6 shot advantage against the Rebels (0-3-1) today.

“Denver was the most unlucky game I’ve ever seen,” OSU Coach Dana Taylor said. “We missed on open-net chances. But today, we had some great goals. The guys moved the ball around well. We got a lot of people into the game. It was nice to see some of our veterans that hadn’t been playing come off the bench and put in solid minutes. It shows the depth that our team has.”

Nishito’s goal came after a corner kick that had been cleared. He took the ball and fired low and hard from 20-plus yards away.

Cameron added his first career goal for OSU about 15 minutes later on a fluky play. A UNLV defender went to clear the ball, but Cameron went for a tackle at the same time, and redirected the ball into the goal.

“It was one of those where everyone expects the ball to be cleared, but it just caught Josh’s foot the right way,” Taylor said.

Christner finished the scoring less than five minutes later, as he scored on a direct free kick from 25 yards away.

Sophomore goalkeeper Packy Deenihan made four saves to earn his first shutout of the season.
