ASHLAND - Falling behind by three goals in the first 30 minutes, the George Fox University Bruins battled back but came up a goal short in a 3-2 loss to the Southern Oregon University Raiders in a non-conference women’s soccer game Saturday afternoon here at University Field.

Chelsea Arakawa got the Raiders off to a huge start when she scored the first two of the team’s three goals.

Arakawa’s first shot went in only 5:44 into the game off a pass from the far corner from Kelly Vilarino. The pass was right to Arakawa and was shot in just wide of George Fox goalie Jessica Cardwell.

Arakawa’s second goal came from a similar pass from Vilarino at 16:34 in the game, kicked in through a mass of players. Morgan Spencer made it 3-0 unassisted as she took a deflected pass from a Bruin player and sent it into the goal wide of the goalie at 29:58.

The Bruins began their comeback attempt with Kayla Weber connecting for her first goal of the season at 35:25. Molly Schaefer sent a pass that actually went behind the Southern Oregon goalie, Melanie Hopkins, and gave Weber a wide-open shot.

Julie Alexander was the second Bruin to score when her shot was deflected from Hopkins’ hands and fell into the goal at 82:25, but the Bruins were unable to score again.

Hopkins recorded 15 saves for Southern Oregon while Cardwell had eight for George Fox. The Raiders took 16 shots, 11 on goal, and the Bruins tallied 18 shots, 17 on goal.

George Fox (2-1) now begins Northwest Conference play Saturday, heading to Spokane, Wash., for a 12 noon game against Whitworth College. The men’s NWC game follows at 2:30 p.m. Southern Oregon (2-3) hosts Northwest Christian College on Tuesday at 4:00 PM.
