LIVE VIDEO: Rescue of Miners in Chile Comes to Fruition

The first miner of 33 is rescued after 69 days underground.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Florencia Avalos Silva Four of the 33 trapped Chilean miners isolated since the Copiapó mining accident on 5 August 2010 have been rescued.

A serious organized rescue effort got underway Tuesday night. Chile's President Miguel Juan Sebastián Piñera Echenique told his people that workers would not give up until the miners were safely recovered.

UN Monitors Developments in Aftermath of Massive Earthquake in Chile

The death toll is 214 and rising.

(SANTIAGO, Chile) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today said he is keeping a close eye on the situation in the Pacific Ocean after a huge earthquake rocked Chile this morning, threatening to send tsunamis crashing through the region.

“The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to those who have lost family and friends and wishes those injured a speedy recovery,” read a statement attributable to his spokesperson.

Chilean Earthquake Update

President-elect Pinera faces a huge task putting Chile back together after the quake.

(PATAGONIA, Argentina) - Salem-News.com A powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale has struck the central Chilean coastal city of Concepcion at 3:34 a.m. local time.

Early reports of damage in Concepcion are spotty due to electricity and cell phone networks having been taken down by the quake.

Tsunami Warnings Issued After 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chile

A tsunami warning has been issued for Chile, Peru and Ecuador.

(CONCEPCION, Chile) - Earthquake zone in Chile The U.S. Geologic Survey reports that an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter Scale struck Chile Saturday at 3:34 a.m. local time.

The epicenter of this massive quake is in the offshore Maule region of Chile, approximately 60 miles north/northwest of Chillan, Chile.
