(WASHINGTON, DC) - Human Rights Ambassador for Salem-News.com, William Nicholas Gomes On 21 January 2014, the indigenous Lenca leader and human rights defender, Mr Justo Sorto, was found dead on a farming estate of the Yance community in the municipality of Jesús de Otoro, in the department of Intibucá, Western Honduras.

Justo Sorto was an active member for twenty years of the Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Indígenas Populares – COPINH (Civic Council of Popular Indigenous Organisations).

Honduras: Killing of Indigenous Environmental Rights Defenders

Two men opened fire on Ms María Enriqueta Matute, Mr Armando Fúnez Medina, and Mr Ricardo Soto Fúnez.

(YORK, UK) - Map of Honduras On 25 August 2013, around 5pm, human rights defenders Ms María Enriqueta Matute, Mr Armando Fúnez Medina and Mr Ricardo Soto Fúnez were killed in an attack.

The three belonged to various tribes of the Tolupán indigenous people, from Locomapa, in the Yoro zone, and had been involved in a peaceful protest against a local antimony mining operation and the construction of a hydroelectric dam in their indigenous zone.

Campaign Launched for Central Americans with Temporary Protected Status in the U.S.

Groups say Permanent Residency is the only solution...

(HOUSTON) - Due to devastation from natural disasters, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) was designated to families from Honduras and Nicaragua in 1999. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch ravaged Honduras and Nicaragua and resulted in the loss and displacement of hundreds of thousands of families who established roots in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Community organizations have formed a coalition and are launching a campaign to promote Permanent Residency for TPS beneficiaries from Central America.

(Tico Times) - The body of Honduran journalist Luz Marina Paz is taken away from the crime scene. Honduran journalist Luz Marina Paz was shot dead by gunmen Tuesday along with a mechanic traveling with her, police said, in the latest in a series of attacks targeting news media. She was killed in an attack outside the capital and became the 17th journalist killed in the Central American nation since a 2009 coup.

She had worked for Radio Globo, linked to ousted president Manuel Zelaya, before joining the Cadena Hondurena de Noticias or CHN broadcaster.
