Flood Risk in Oregon Increases Due to Worse-than-Normal Fire Season

The upcoming rains may be another challenge for many.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon-fires Areas in Oregon downstream of wildfires are at greater risk for flooding this year, and authorities are urging home and business owner in affected areas to purchase flood insurance.

"Fires have increased flood potential downstream from burned areas and home and business owners in those areas should look into purchasing flood insurance before the rainy season begins," said Christine Shirley, National Flood Insurance Coordinator (NFIPC) for ODLC.

Registration for Cover Oregon Application Fairs Filling Up Quickly Across the State

Prior to arriving at a fair, Cover Oregon asks that people pre-register online for a specific time slot.

(SALEM) - Salem-News.com Cover Oregon is kicking off the first of six application fairs across the state today to help people apply for health insurance. Interest in the fairs is high and registration time slots are filling quickly. Space is limited and Cover Oregon encourages people who wish to attend an event to pre-register at Application Fairs Registration. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. There may also be wait times.

In addition, Oregonians are encouraged to start their application now by downloading and printing it at CoverOregon.com and bringing it to the fair.

Two Papers Examine Threat to Oregon`s Health Exchange Posed by `Adverse Selection`

OCPP has published two papers examining the threat that adverse selection poses to Oregon's health exchange.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Established by the 2011 Oregon legislature, the Oregon Health Insurance Exchange is a key part of the state's effort to create affordable, quality health coverage for all Oregonians. It's set to begin operating in 2014.

The laws that created the exchange, however, leave it exposed to a dynamic that has caused the demise of health insurance exchanges in other states: adverse selection.

Oregon`s High Court Upholds $9 Million Judgment Against Farmer`s Insurance

The majority opinion in the case noted that the high court considered the defendant’s arguments in the petition for review.

(SACRAMENTO) - Oregon Supreme Court The Oregon Supreme Court has has upheld a $8.9 million judgment against Farmer’s Insurance Co. of Oregon, following a class action complaint decrying the company’s practices related to payment of personal injury protection (PIP) benefits.

The decision, issued July 8, marked the Supreme Court’s second opinion in the case.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Cartoon by Douglas MacGregor, The News-Press I first became aware of the problem of toxic drywall manufactured in China during my 2010 visit to New Orleans. Many homeowners rebuilt their homes after Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, and Hurricane Rita in September 2005 using Chinese drywall.

This drywall made occupants sick, corroded metal fixtures, and rendered homes unfit to live in. Homeowners had to tear out the drywall, corroded wiring, fixtures, etc.
