Hundreds of Oregonians Occupy Their Post Offices in Response to Threat of Rural Closures

“Deadwood wouldn’t exist in ten years without the post office” - Leslie Benscoter, retired schoolteacher and Occupy the Post Office organizer in Deadwood, Oregon

(Scappoose, Ore.) - Rural Organizing Project Hundreds of Oregonians Occupied 23 post offices across the state on Monday in response to the United States Postal Service’s threat to close 21 rural post offices.

Occupiers carried Christmas cards, cookies and gifts of appreciation to their postal workers and collected over 1,000 petition signatures asking Congress to reform laws that have caused the unnecessary funding crisis within the Postal Service.

Downed Aircraft and Injured Pilot Recovered Near Scappoose (PHOTO UPDATE)

A Lifeflight helicopter was used to transport the single male patient from the area to Emanuel Hospital in Portland.

(SCAPPOOSE, Ore.) - Plane crash A pilot received injuries today when his single-seat, light aircraft crashed northwest of Saint Helens, Oregon, approximately 5 miles northwest of the Scappoose Airport.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office dispatched its Search and Rescue Unit and requested assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard for help in locating the aircraft after they were contacted by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Police Investigate Double Homicide in Columbia County

The investigation is ongoing and few details have been confirmed at this point by police.

(SCAPOOSE, Ore.) - Homicide investigation The Columbia County Sheriff's Office has identified the bodies of two adults found dead in their home a mile south of Scappoose earlier today.

61-year old Carolyn Ann LeBlanc and 41-year old Deric James Fox, succumbed to homicidal violence in their home, police say, and their bodies were discovered a little before 9:30 a.m. when concerned neighbors gained access to their residence.

School Bus With 35 Kids Onboard Involved in Fatal Traffic Crash

Police aren't sure why the driver of a 2008 Honda Civic crossed the paved center median into the southbound lanes and crashed head-on with the school bus.
