Salem Helping Its Community of Veterans

By 2027, 55% of veterans in Oregon will be over 65.

(SALEM, Ore.) - homeless veteran According to Oregon government statistics, the state has the largest concentration of senior veterans in America.

Half of the veterans are over the age of 65, including many that served in Korea and also during World War II.

WWII Airman Turgeon Accounted For After 78 Years

Turgeon will be buried in Shoreline, Washington. His remains will arrive May 14th via Sea-Tac Airport.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Alfred F. Turgeon On Aug. 1, 1943, the B-24 Liberator aircraft on which Turgeon was serving as a radio operator crashed as a result of enemy anti-aircraft fire during Operation TIDAL WAVE, the largest bombing mission against the oil fields and refineries at Ploiesti, north of Bucharest, Romania.

His remains were not identified following the war.

142nd Fighter Wing to Conduct Veterans Day Flyovers

All passes will be approximately 1,000 feet above ground level and about 400 mph airspeed.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - F-15C Eagles The 142nd Fighter Wing based at the Portland Air National Guard Base, Portland, Oregon will conduct Veterans Day flyovers for ceremonies at locations throughout the state on Monday, Nov 11, 2019.

The F-15 Eagle fighter jets are scheduled to conduct flyovers at the following community locations at, or around, the designated times.

The Second World War: An Oregon Perspective on Exhibit

On Display until November 28 in the Capitol Galleria

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon Capitol The archives of the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education includes testimonies about the Second World War and the Holocaust from soldiers, liberators and survivors. Some of these stories have been put into this traveling exhibit.

The Salem Veterans of Foreign Wars 661 Uniform Display Museum has supplemented the exhibit with seven service uniforms worn by Jewish soldiers in WWII.

Schrader, Moulton Introduce Bill to Prohibit Hiring Freeze at the VA

"Placing this hiring freeze on the VA is an absolutely unacceptable way to treat the men and women who have risked life and limb in the service of our country.”

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - hiring freeze Monday, in one of his first acts as President, Trump signed an Executive Order implementing a 90 day hiring freeze across the executive branch, including at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Congressman Kurt Schrader (OR-5) and Congressman Seth Moulton (MA-6) introduced legislation Tuesday that would prohibit any hiring freeze from specifically affecting the VA.

Salem Receives Additional Housing Vouchers to Help Homeless Veterans

With the additional 25 vouchers, Salem now has 88 Vouchers to Assist Homeless Vets Find Permanent Homes.

(SALEM, Ore.) - homeless veteran The supportive housing assistance is provided through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program which combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by VA.

HUD’s recent announcement awarded $18.5 million to housing authorities nationwide to help more than 2,200 veterans experiencing homelessness to find homes. VASH vouchers are now providing permanent housing to 1,893 homeless veterans in Oregon.

Portland 42nd Annual Veteran`s Day Parade (SLIDESHOW)

This year, the parade honored the 2 million women veterans who have served in the armed forces.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - veterans day parade Thousands of traditional parade-goers and veteran supporters came out to watch the Portland's 42nd Annual Veteran's Day Parade Friday morning.

Grand Marshal 93-year old Golda Fabian, of Tigard, has been in the Portland Veterans Day Parade since 1988. 93-year old Hattie Kelley, of Beaverton, and 94-year old Muriel "Dolly" Ruble, of Portland, were the two other Grand Marshals leading the parade. The three women were WWII veterans of the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve.
