Following Iowa, race in Oregon will need to adapt to changes in GOP field

Oregon’s primary election is scheduled to occur on May 15, with only nine other states holding their primaries after that date.
(PORTLAND, Ore.) -
Just a day after the presidential caucuses in Iowa, the field of GOP candidates to vie for the votes of Oregonians has narrowed.
Michele Bachmann, a Republican congresswoman from Minnesota, has suspended her presidential campaign. Bachmann was considered in polls this summer to be a front-running candidate here in Oregon after Sarah Palin announced she would not be seeking the presidency.

DR Congo Polls Disrupted by Violence

About 19,000 candidates competing for 500 legislative seats, while 11 candidates are vying for the presidency.
(WASHINGTON D.C.) -
At least seven people killed in attacks on voting centres and vehicle carrying ballots in the city of Lubumbashi.
Seven people have been killed in two separate clashes on Election Day in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the country's interior minister has said.
Although voting was scheduled to be completed early on Monday evening, the chairman of the country's electoral commission announced that voting would be extended at least until Tuesday.

HempStalk 2008 Gives Legalization Activists a Voice (VIDEO)

(PORTLAND, Ore.) -
Bringing Oregon's hemp movement to center stage, HempStalk 08 created an environment where rational discussion regarding Cannabis legalization was the norm.
Thousands converged on Portland's Eastbank Festival Plaza last weekend for the fourth annual HempStalk, learning about the benefits of hemp cultivation and to support legalization of Cannabis for all adults.
Paul Stanford of the The Hemp and Cannabis Foundation (THCF) is an organizer of the event. He introduced Dr. Phil Leveque as an integral force behind the success of medical marijuana in Oregon.
Leveque took the stage and addressed the enthusiastic crowd, "Good afternoon, you Potheads!", met with a resounding applause.

Senators Introduce Bill Requiring Access to Voter Registration for Veterans

Feinstein, Kerry, Reid, Obama, Clinton, Leahy, Schumer, Murray, Wyden are behind legislation that would give veterans access to voter registration services at VA facilities.
(WASHINGTON, D,.C.) -
U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) today introduced a bill to require the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide voter registration services to veterans in the department’s care.
The senators introduced the legislation after receiving a response from Veterans Affairs Secretary James B. Peake earlier this month, again denying the senators’ request that Secretary Peake designate VA facilities as voter registration agencies. Senators Harry Reid (D-NV), Barack Obama (D-Ill), Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Patty Murray (D-WA) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) are co-sponsors.

The Family Network on Disabilities of Florida, Inc. has called for the use of a voting system that is accessible for persons with disabilities to be utilized in any possible repeat of Florida's Democratic Presidential Primary election.

Voters Say NO Salem-Keizer Transit District Levy

The defeat means the district will have to make more cuts to service next year.
(SALEM) -
Voters in Marion and Polk counties narrowly defeated the Salem-Keizer Transit Districts $6.8 million levy.
The majority of the levy would have been used to maintain the current level of transit services in Salem and Keizer and restore some of the services reduced this September.

Tuesday is the deadline to register to vote in Oregon. To register, you must live in Oregon, be a U.S. citizen and be 18 years old by Election Day.
Volume 1 (state measures) of the State Voters' Pamphlet have already been mailed out .
Volume 2 (candidates) of the State Voters' Pamphlet will be mailed out beginning Wednesday.

The $24.72 million Salem Fire General Obligation Bond Measure would:
Add two new fire stations to the community’s emergency response system; replace two existing fire stations; upgrade remaining stations with earthquake strengthening and backup power; and replace the existing fleet of fire trucks.
Nine fire stations currently serve Salem. Salem’s last fire station was built in 1982.
