Tran Thi Hoan, 26, studied medicine only to be told that she couldn’t become a doctor because of a war fought 20 years before she was born.
The ostensible reason was that she had no legs or left hand, but the main reason, and the cause of so much misery blighting the lives of millions of other Vietnamese, is the 20 million gallons of Agent Orange sprayed in her country by US forces in the Sixties.

There are wolves prowling around the Department of Corrections grounds off Center Street. I timidly slid past one that was crouching near a fir tree. Another bared his teeth, staring at me menacingly. It made me nervous.
There are gray wolves, brown wolves, and painted striped wolves. They’re about a half an inch thick and stiff as, well, a board.

A public meeting on a possible waste permit modification for White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in southern New Mexico is scheduled for next Wednesday, August 1, in Las Cruces.
The meeting will consider a petition to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) for a change in the permit status of six solid waste management units located on WSMR land near Las Cruces.

Earlier this month U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton became the first high level U.S. official to visit Laos since the Vietnam War.
Although not touted as such, the visit was an effort to mend fences with Laos, the most heavily bombed nation per capita in history.
