Firefighters Continue Battling Canal Creek Fire, Now at 200 Acres

Several road closures are in effect due to concerns for public and firefighter safety.

(SWEET HOME, Ore.) - The Canal Creek Fire 8 miles southwest of Detroit, Oregon, has grown to 200 acres, according to fire officials on scene. They say the fire has continued to burn in heavy timber through old-growth stands of Douglas Fir.

Fire Forces Evacuation of Mosier as Governor Declares a Conflagration

Oregon's conflagration may be invoked only by the Governor and allows the State Fire Marshal to dispatch structural firefighters and equipment.

(MOSIER, Ore.) - The entire city of Mosier, Oregon is under evacuation as the Microwave fire approaches the outskirts of the city.

The public is urged to stay out of this area so that fire crews can continue to work at containing this fire.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - The Canal Creek Fire in the Detroit Wilderness area had grown to 90 acres of 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Fire officials say warm temperatures helped the fire advance upslope through heavy timber with long-range spotting.

Canal Creek Fire at Detroit Prompts Closures and Evacuations

With light winds and warm temperatures today, the fire is expected to push up-slope in this area of heavy timber and old-growth Douglas Fir.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The wildland fire reported at 6:00 pm last night about 8 miles southwest of Detroit has been named the Canal Creek Fire.

Fire Crews Battle Wildfire Near Detroit

Citizens are asked to remain clear of the affected area so that crews can get in and attack the fire.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A fire was reported in the upper Elk Creek drainage area around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, approximately 8 miles southwest of the town of Detroit, and about 2 miles west of Slate Rock.

The fire was estimated to be 35 acres in size. Fire resources are responding to the location at this time.

Lockheed Fire in California Raging Out of Control

The last fire to burn this area was the Pine Mountain Fire in 1948.

(SANTA CRUZ) - AccuWeather.com meteorologists do not believe that lightning started the fire that broke in the Santa Cruz Mountains of central California Wednesday evening.

The rapid spread of the fire was aided by winds gusting to nearly 20 mph. The fire is burning in a heavily wooded, evergreen forest area well south of San Francisco, north of Bonny Doon in Santa Cruz County.

Oak Hills Home Severely Damaged by Fire

Fire investigators remained on scene and the are no damage estimates at the time of this report.

(TUALATIN, Ore.) - Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to a house fire at 15094 NW Oakmont Loop in Washington County Tuesday night at 7:35 p.m.

A spokesman says the first engine from Oak Hills Fire Station 68 arrived in 4 minutes and found the single family residence fully involved with fire from all sides.

Salem Businessman Arrested in March 15th Triple Homicides

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Police have made an arrest in the disturbing March 15th triple Homicide that started out as a report of a fire in a building that evening, just before 7:00 p.m.

Salem Firefighters and police officers responded to a fire alarm at Myke's Custom Rod & Speed Shop located at 1375 Cross Street SE in Salem. While battling the fire, crews discovered the bodies of three people inside the business. Police investigators quickly released the news that they had been shot.

Western Lane District Raises Fire Precaution Levels

The district imposed fire safety rules on recreational activities in the forest on July 20th.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - The ongoing heat wave has prompted the Oregon Department of Forestry's Western Lane District to raise the fire safety precaution levels across western Lane County and northern Douglas County.

Beginning July 30th, most timber harvest activity on the three-quarters of a million acres protected from wildfire by the district will be restricted to the period from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Missing 14-Year Old Swimmer Recovered From Willamette River (UPDATED)

The search for the missing swimmer came to a close today with the discovery of the boy's body.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - UPDATE 1:00 p.m.: The Polk County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Oregon National Guard Helicopter have located the missing 14 year-old boy who disappeared Monday night while swimming with friends in the Willamette River near Spongs Landing.

The body of 14-year old Joe Engichy, was located at 11:00 a.m. today in about seven feet of water.
