A forced removal of failed asylum-seekers to Sri Lanka has been put on hold by a judge after a day of frantic legal appeals. Foreign Affairs correspondent Jonathan Miller reports.

(LONDON) - Frantic efforts by lawyers in London to prevent an aircraft, chartered by the British government, from forcibly returning failed asylum-seekers to Sri Lanka have succeeded in delaying the plane’s scheduled departure.

Immigration lawyers have been seeking last-minute stays on the grounds that returnees – many of whom have claimed past links with the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam – risk interrogation and torture on arrival back in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Justice Edwards-Stuart has reserved judgement today on the travellers’ site. The judge granted residents of the UK’s largest ‘illegal’ travellers’ site a short stay of execution until 4:00 p.m. on Monday next, when the case is due back to court.
