One Border, Two Narratives

The issues of border security and violence will continue to be a live topic in El Paso this week.

(LAS CRUCES, N.M.) - Border Wall in Mexico One Border, Two Narratives As the US House of Representatives approved a $600 million border security bill August 10, polemics over the safety of the US-Mexico border intensified.

In language reminiscent of Iraq and Afghanistan, New Mexico Democratic Congressman Harry Teague praised the passage of the 2010 Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriation Bill (6080) as a concrete gesture of support for the first-term representative’s “border security surge.”

Oregon Immigrant Rights Coalition Applauds Injunction Against SB1070

Key parts prevented from going into affect on Thursday.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Immigrant rights Today, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton issued a preliminary injunction preventing several sections of Arizona's racial profiling law from going into affect on Thursday.

SB1070, signed into law in April, is the most extreme legislation anywhere in the country to deal with the nation's broken immigration system. Opposition to the law includes law enforcement, a diverse coalition of faith leaders, immigrants' advocates, civil rights leaders, and legal scholars.

Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua News: Violence, Tensions Boil

Approximately 6,000 people have been murdered in Ciudad Juarez alone since January 2008.

(LAS CRUCES, N.M.) - Crosses in Ciudad, Juarez Around-the-clock executions, routine kidnappings, burnings of rural homes, hangings of murder victims from overpasses, scatterings of body parts on public streets, a car bomb, and threats of more violence have all put Ciudad Juarez and the state of Chihuahua on extreme edge.

The violence boils as Chihuahua's Governor, state legislature and municipal governments enter their last months in office and prepare to hand over political leadership to others from the same Institutional Revolutionary Party.

Of 537,000 homes in rural Michoacan, nearly one in four, or 23 percent, stand abandoned throughout the entire year or portions of it, the Inegi study finds.

Gunmen in Deadly Mexican Police Shootout Possibly Tied to Texas Crash

Vehicle from hit and run crash in El Paso could be tied to police shooting.

(CIUDAD / SALEM) - Fatal shootout and fire scene A tragic deadly shooting at a Mexican police station may be tied to a crash that happened in El Paso's Lower Valley, shortly before the vehicle, a Chevy Suburban, fled the scene in Texas and crossed in Mexico at the Ysleta Port of Entry.

Border officials are believed to have fired at the wrecked vehicle that was able to make the international crossing in spite of body damage, while being pursued by American police for fleeing the scene of an accident.
